More of these could be on the horizon
Republican presidential hopeful John McCain says his administration would accelerate the development of nuclear energy plants. With a goal of building 45 additional reactors by 2030.
Obviously there is pressure to move in another energy direction given the stranglehold on oil and its affect on, not only the nation, but the world.
Truck drivers have been going on strike in Portugal and Spain where there have been violent demonstrations. Similar demonstrations have occurred in India, as the flow of petrol to the pumps has slowed and the cost of fuel has risen.
But any increase in nuclear development must include stringent guidelines to protect us all. Remember, nuclear fallout is carried around the world by weather systems. Of course, those in closest proximity to a nuclear disaster, such as Chernobyl, are most adversely affected. But so are the rest of us. The fallout affects crops and livestock.
McCain's proposal deserves consideration. But a hasty move toward a massive nuclear energy program without safety assurances in place could prove disastrous.
