Levin - asking tough questions
Several U.S. senators are demanding to know why detainees held by American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan were interrogated using harsh techniques.
Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) wants to know why some suspects were stripped naked, intimidated by attack dogs and deprived of sleep. He charges that the law was manipulated in order to accomodate the practices.
These are important questions that demand answers. Answers from the commander-in-chief, the president of the United States. Because, as a previous occupier of the Oval Office once pointed out so succinctly, that's where the buck stops.
If the United States is promoting democracy around the world, then why are people being treated in a decidedly undemocratic manner?
The Bush administration is responsible for these reprehensible actions. As Levin correctly notes, former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld authorized them over the objections of military lawyers.
Our brave men and women of the military wear the flag of the United States of America on their uniforms. They should be ordered to act in accordance with what that flag stands for.

One of the missions of the United States was to "export" democracy to the middle east.
Let's see, being stripped naked, being intimidated by attack dogs and having to endure sleep deprivation is the kind of democracy that we are encouraging the area of the middle east to adopt, if they follow our lead.
That's what happens when a buck isn't worth a buck anymore!
